If GM of all companies could make a small, unobtrusive airbag wheel back in 2003, why couldn’t everyone else?
My massive airbag for reference

They never bothered restyling the dash, so they could focus their energies on the steering wheel.

Lazy design and cost cutting. There were small airbag steering wheels as far as the late 90s.
This is in my 147 that started production in 2001.
E46
Buy yeah till around the mid 2000s we were greeted by huge steering wheels.

Maybe large steering wheels are more commonplace as a false sense of security for consumers? I wonder if buyers associate large steering wheels with bigger airbags and therefore more safety or a larger wheel as something more substantial to grip.

I gotta admit, that
is
a pretty decent-looking wheel.

In earlier times, I spent time behind that steering wheel. yeah...

Due to cost-cutting, they couldn’t include the shrapnel that airbag mfgr’s like Takata use as their primary cushioning device.
Typical GM, taking the cheap way out once again .

Is this yours? If so what’s your indash unit? In the pic it looks like it can run a backup camera.
I have an 06 and my radio is starting to go out.

Still big. Hard to get a sense of scale in the image I posted but the whole wheel is probably the same size as the one in your pic. You can cover the center with your palm.

The previous wheel was small too:

So, what, they think truck owners aren’t as concerned about safety?

If I had an older GM airbag car I’d put one on in a heartbeat. The previous version wasn’t bad either:

It’s my cousin’s truck. The unit is a Pioneer 4200 or 4201 I think.

Probably a single stage that isn’t as big as other, meaning it covers less of your face when needed. Also, I doubt GM ever actually produced an airbag. It’s probably a Takata in there.

GM wasn’t worried about adding all of the killer rivets, so they could make their airbags smaller!

Maybe those extra thick spokes contain airbag bits that might otherwise be in the center like on the E39?

Those wheels always looked like they were frowning, to me.
I think either the tech was different, or makers were showing off that they actually had an airbag - make it big so everyone knows.

I like side bolsters that actually exist and I hate that it feels reclined even when it’s all the way up.

We have an 800, and I drive 900’s for work. The 800 is actually well built, the 900 is not.
